Chocolate Presents
If you are not sure what kind of gift someone would like; chocolate is always a good bet. You don’t have to worry about size or color and a good box of chocolates is almost universally appreciated. My mother and my mother-in-law both had favorite chocolate presents. They actually loved the same thing and every year at Christmas, no matter what other gift we bought them; they each had to have one or more boxes of chocolate covered cherries. The first Christmas after they died, it seemed so strange not to have a few boxes under the tree. Corporate gifts often include baskets of gourmet food, coffee, or chocolates. At my last job we got a leaning tower of chocolate from some of our clients. In an all female office, it did not last long.
Valentine’s Day is one time when chocolate gifts are expected. The traditional heart shaped box of chocolates is always appropriate. Lately there has been a surge of popularity for chocolate covered strawberries or chocolate roses. One of my favorite places to shop for chocolate gifts is called the Peanut Principal. It is not far from home and they make their chocolates on site. On Valentine’s Day and Easter you can find chocolate gifts in any size or shape. Once my nephews were too big for an Easter basket, we bought them chocolate race cars and motorcycles. My husband shops there for my Valentine’s Day truffles and I rarely pass by without stopping for his favorite dark chocolate non pareils.
When I was first married I worked in a drug store and when the gift boxes of chocolates came in for Valentine’s Day, it was a really big deal. We had to find just the right way to display them so that boyfriends and husbands could easily find the perfect gift. Most of ours came from Whitman’s and Braches in those days. Today Godiva is the choice of many people. They are delicious. I got a box for Christmas from my husband. I put them in the freezer and treated myself once a day so they lasted quite a while. I visited the Godiva outlet in Pennsylvania and bought chocolate sauce, hot chocolate mix, chocolate covered spoons, and Godiva mugs for Christmas presents. They were appreciated by all.
If you are clueless about a present, especially if it is for a woman; you cannot go wrong with a chocolate present unless she happens to be allergic. She may protest that she “really shouldn’t” have any, but trust me; she’ll love it and very likely will not share with you.
